The Importance of a Mommy Tribe

Where would I be without my mommy tribe?  You know, the important women in your life that help you navigate this crazy world of parenting. It really does take a village! Here are various ways that we can form our tribes, sometimes without even realizing it.

Family– Naturally we rely on our mothers, grandmothers, mother-in-laws, sisters, sister-in-laws, aunts, and cousins when we have a baby. They are the ones that have been there/done that, and can pass along the family traditions while giving you love and support. Plus you know that they love your children unconditionally, it doesn’t get better than that.

Friends– Where would I be without my girlfriends?  Whether they are moms themselves or not, they are my rock. Whether you have known each other for 20+ years or 3 months, they are the friends that you can cry to when things get tough or celebrate with when things are going great. They will drive 6 hours to visit you when you need a pick me up. They will patiently let your kid play with their hair for hours on end if it means you get a break. They will share their advice when you ask them a gazillion questions about your morning sickness or sick baby. They will take you out on a kid free date when you need one. They will also support you when you make scary life changing decisions. They love your kids and your kids love them right back. I would not be able to do it without them.

Mom Groups– These groups can be found anywhere, especially online. I have been part of mom groups that had members from all over the world!  There are so many different types of mom groups you can join ranging from working moms and stay at home moms to cloth diaper moms and moms who need wine to survive. These groups can be invaluable because you learn so much from each other. I have made great  friends from being in a mom group and I know these friendships will last a lifetime. Our children are the same age and are like part of my own family! I have even met them in person.

Neighbors– I have been blessed with amazing neighbors that are great mommies as well. It is so much fun to spend a warm summer night sitting outside, having a drink, and watching your kids run around enjoying the sprinkler. Or going out and venting about your crazy week over ice cream and fries. They have brought me food after recovering from surgery and child birth. We have watched our families grow and enjoy our children playing together because they are building lifelong friendships. Neighbors make such an important addition to your tribe, if you have great ones don’t let them go!

Co-workers– Grabbing coffee together while venting about the rough night you had with the baby with another mommy who is in your shoes makes life easier. You are both exhausted, and in the trenches providing for your family. You feel their pain when they have to call out due to a sick child or have to leave early for a Dr’s appointment. You can grab lunch together and reminisce about the fun weekend you had with your kids that was way too short as always. You can push eachother to achieve your goals even when the going gets tough. Sometimes co-workers can turn into amazing friends, I know I have grown my tribe this way as well.

These are all great ways to build your tribe. Who do you consider part of your mommy tribe and why? Do you feel having one is important? Feel free to share your thoughts!
