What’s it Like to be a Blogger?

I am sitting on my living room floor with my laptop. My 7 month old is on my left side screaming. I would very much like to think that this is due to teething but a part of me feels like he is yelling at me to stop what I am doing. My 150-lb dog has parked at my feet with her rope, wet with the copious unmeasurable amount of slobber that only a dog with her jowls can produce. My 4-year-old runs up to me and insists that the Hulk has ripped up the instructions of every single Lego set we have ever purchased for him. I let him know that Mommy Hulk will not be purchasing any more Avenger Lego sets if he cannot treat them with respect. This is not true but I cannot imagine using some of these pieces in anything but an Avenger-specific scene.

The Slobber Monster

I have two articles that are overdue this month and this is certainly not the one I intended on writing. Dearest editor, I apologize. I think I was supposed to write an article about raising trailblazing children or something. I should know because I pitched it. As I sit here, I just have to wonder, how do they do it? I usually don’t have any trouble writing. I write lesson plans, graduate school assignments, etcetera. But taking pictures where my children are both enjoying themselves and look like the trailblazing children I hope they become is not happening today. And I am definitely not getting in on the picture. I hardly look like the fresh-faced professional young woman you would otherwise take advice from when I’m in sweatpants and a mega bun.

Blogging is a full time job and bloggers certainly don’t get the credit they deserve. How do you drive traffic to your website or your posts? The short answer is social media but that actually requires a lot more planning than it seems. Did you know that it’s necessary to monitor the time of day you post an article? Pouring over data like when to post and what demographic to choose when you boost a Facebook post and creating content that drives traffic to a website? Not easy. Doing this all while attempting to spend time with your family? Whew. Sometimes I’m just glad to finish a text message to my husband using the appropriate punctuation and correct spelling.

To my fellow bloggers, both full-time and part-time, I am with you.
