Cherishing the Moments with Grandparents

When I agreed to write a post for Grandparents day, I was excited to talk about the special bond my kids have with their great grandmother. Then tragedy hit our family and my husband and I both lost our grandmothers within the same week. I thought about emailing our editor and telling them I really didn’t want to write anything but then I realized I should write about cherishing the moments you have with people.

Four years ago, my grandmother at the age of 90, came to live with my parents in Pittsburgh. This was the first time in her life that she had lived outside of St Louis, Mo.,  and she was excited about the adventure of moving. The fact that she lived with my parents gave my kids the opportunity to see her almost every day.

After my daughter was born, the two of them formed an inseparable bond. Millie constantly told us that her Gigi was her best friend. My grandmother was in relatively good health for her age so it came very unexpected when my mom was told, that she was nearing the end. As a matter of fact,  the day hospice was called, Millie and Gigi had ate breakfast outside together.

For this past Christmas, I really wanted to get “generation” photos taken as a gift for my mom. Well life got in the way and we kept putting the idea off. In July I decided to just call my friend and go ahead and book the photos for the following week. When I told my mom, she even suggested we postpone them, because Gigi had just gotten Generations of Loveout of the hospital and all of our schedules were busy. I am so glad we ended up getting the photos taken, because those photos and that session will always mean so much to me. I look forward to sharing those photos with Millie as she gets older and the memories of her Gigi fade.

My real advice this Grandparents Day is to to cherish every moment you share with them because you really never know when it will be the last.
