What I Learned When My Oldest Graduated High School

This time last year I was knee deep in graduation preparations. Aside from the realization that my first born was now all grown up was the terror of the cost of college but first graduation Day. A day filled with exhilaration and accomplishment. Eighteen years flashed before my eyes as I watched my son walk to receive his diploma. Now real life begins.

My son’s senior year was a huge learning experience for me. Not only did I learn a lot about PHEAA and FAFSA but I learned a lot about my son as a young man.

I learned that not every 18 year old knows exactly what they want to do or be upon graduation. I learned it is OK for your child to carve their own paths in life. I learned there is no competition when it comes to your child’s future endeavors and shame on us parents for turning it into one. The biggest lesson I learned is that these kids are smart enough to make it through high school, senior projects, S.A.T. , sports, jobs, social pressures and more then they will figure it out. I would not go back to high school today if I was paid.

Congratulations to all the graduates! Your future is bright and the sky is limit. Congratulations to the parents as well because you can also say..you did it!
