The Little Gym of Pittsburgh-South Hills

When Amy Martin and her husband took their son to a parent/child class in Maryland, they were so impressed with the program that they decided to open up their own Little Gym, bringing The Little Gym franchise to Pittsburgh. The Little Gym of Pittsburgh-South Hills is conveniently located at Donaldson’s Crossroads in McMurray, PA. The Martins are hoping to open their second location soon.

The Little Gym takes a “Three-Dimensional Learning approach to skill development, incorporating lessons to help children develop physical, social, and life like skills. All of our programs are divided into themed, multi-week Learning Units that lead to a natural progression of skills.” -Published 2017-2018 Season Brochure

“The best way to encourage children is with a smile.” – Amy Martin, Owner

The Little Gym teaches children ages 4 months to 12 years different skills in gymnastics, sports, karate, and dance. They offer a variety of classes which include parent/child, child only, camps, birthday parties, and parents’ survival nights. Parent/child classes are 45 minutes and geared towards children 4 months to 3 years of age. Child independent classes are for children aged 3 to 12 years old and last 50-60 minutes. Each class is defined with a cool title like Bugs (4-10 months), Giggle Worms (4-5 years) or Twisters (6-12 years). For the Fall, there are 20 groups divided between numerous ages and different skill sets.

Classes are taught at different times during the week, which is a huge bonus for full-time working moms like myself. If you cannot make your time slot, The Little Gym offers make-up classes. Scheduling is easy and convenient for those with hectic schedules!

The Little Gym is full of bright colors, gym mats, and activity areas. The clean activity area is a shoe free zone and full of hand sanitizer stations. There is upbeat music for dancing and a friendly atmosphere where the smiles are contagious.

Our instructor, Miss Katie, was wonderful. She introduced herself to new parents and chatted with the regulars. She was energetic and cheered on every single child.

My son and I had the pleasure of attending a few Beasts and Super Beasts classes. This particular class is geared towards children between the ages of 19 months and 3 years old. It is a parent/child class that lasts 45 minutes. There is a lesson, playtime, and skill of the week. Each lesson and skill is focused on the development of the child. During our classes, we learned about listening, attachment, and motor skills.

Each week parents have the opportunity to watch their child learn a new lesson and skill. At each class I was able to encourage my son to try something without me holding his hand. Playtime allowed our children to demonstrate courage and make friendships.

By the third class my son was surprising me with everything he had learned. He followed directions from Miss Katie and even cusped his hand to his ear to signal he was listening. This was something he learned in the first class. Not once, but twice he tried the skill of the week. He practiced skills from previous classes and even made a new friend in the process!

The classes are affordable and offer several payment options. Annual Family membership is $35 which will allow you savings on additional classes throughout the year. Join any class at any time and receive PRO-RATE class tuition pending availability.

My son and I cannot wait to sign up for our next class adventure. Thank you Amy and staff for giving my son a little bit of new found confidence!
