Looking for an affordable night of fun for the whole family? Don’t miss the Hillman Performing Arts Series, which offers a diverse lineup of shows that are sure to entertain both kids and adults. The shows take place at the Hillman Center for Performing Arts, which is conveniently located in Fox Chapel on the Shady Side Academy Senior School campus, with free parking.
The 2018-2019 series offers more shows than ever before, including a four-show Main Stage Series in the Hillman Center’s 665-seat Richard E. Rauh Theater and a three-show Black Box Series in the smaller, more intimate Peter J. Kountz Theater.
The Main Stage Series features four family-friendly shows that kids are sure to love. It kicks off October 20 with the art performance troupe Artrageous. Imagine an artist creating a masterpiece before your eyes in mere moments. With a palette that mixes captivating vocals, intricate choreography and exciting audience interaction, Artrageous takes you on a unique visual journey packed with inspiration, creativity and fun. On November 17, ventriloquist and comedienne Lynn Trefzger brings a trunk full of comical characters to life on the main stage. Audiences will be treated to her vocal illusion talents as they meet her friends: a lovable camel, a grumpy old man and a feisty little girl – and maybe even some audience members who are brought up on stage! After a break for the holiday season, the Main Stage Series resumes on March 16, 2019, with magician The Amazing Max. Max promises that “every show is unique because every child brought to the stage is unique,” and delivers a custom magic experience that kids will carry with them long after the show ends. Finally, on April 13, 2019, The Flying Karamazov Brothers will close the Main Stage Series with a night full of fun and zany antics. Come and belly-laugh the night away with their wild theatrics, arcane errata, astonishing juggling feats and – for the first time ever on the Hillman stage – flame throwing! On September 15, singer-songwriter and cellist Shana Tucker delivers a unique voice to her self-described genre of “ChamberSoul.” Her lyrical melodies evoke strong hints of jazz, soulful folk and acoustic pop, woven into a unique rhythmic tapestry. Get a sneak peek of Shana here.
On December 8, pianist Deanna Witkoski makes her Pittsburgh debut, performing songs from her album Raindrop: Improvisations on Chopin, a solo piano session that seamlessly combines jazz, Chopin, and the music of Brazil. Watch a preview clip of Deanna here.
On March 9, just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, the Black Box Series closes out with Poor Man’s Gambit, a trio of traditional Irish musicians who blend Celtic and American music to create a unique and energetic sound. Check out Poor Man’s Gambit here.
As part of its mission, the Hillman Center shares the talents of some of its visiting artists with local community organizations. This year, both Lynn Trefzger and The Amazing Max will perform for patients at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh while they’re in town as part of the Hillman Center’s outreach program.
The Hillman Series offers several ticketing options for the 2018-2019 season.
