Why I’m Using Kesha’s Grammy Performance As A Learning Tool For My Son

I don’t know what’s more terrifying; being the mother of a son or the mother of a daughter. I’ve only had boys, so I can only speak to that experience, and I’ll assume that being a parent in general is terrifying and each child, regardless of gender or identification, presents unique challenges. Being a mother to a son today means facing the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements head on, and using them as an opportunity to have frank, sometimes uncomfortable,  discussions with your child.

We started discussing consent when he was four and wouldn’t stop poking a playmate that did not want to be poked. We point out kindness at every turn, we practice forgiveness, compassion, and generosity, we stand up for ourselves and others, and we know our self worth. And I have never seen a better, more powerful example of this than Kesha’s breathtaking performance of Praying during last night’s Grammy’s.

The absolute raw emotion, the sadness, the hope, the absolute humanity of it all left me and my partner in tears on the couch. My seven year old had long gone to bed by the time she performed, but we will be watching this and using it as a discussion jumping off point about who we are and who we want to be. You don’t have to let trauma define you. You are the best and only teller of your story. Forgiveness is always more powerful that hate.   These are the lessons I want my child to know. And that’s why Kesha’s performance will be required viewing in our home this evening.

Maybe as an encore we can tackle #GrammySoMale next, who knows?
