Ask The Nanny :: Galentine’s Day Ideas

Valentine’s Day is an overrated holiday if you ask me. All of the hearts, tacky decorations and the cards are too much for this single gal to bear. I know I’m not alone in this. As a single girl, Valentine’s Day is my least favorite holiday. Thank goodness for the greatness that is Amy Poehler and the writers at “Parks and Rec” for inventing a wonderful new holiday, Galentine’s Day.

Galentine’s Day is a marvelous celebration of friendship. I have introduced this holiday to my nanny kids and over the past 2 years, we have made it fun, festive and filled with friendship. I try to create a fun day of crafts, tea parties and dress-up. I adore how excited they become when we start planning out our tea party menu and costumes.

The first year, I dressed as Fiona from Shrek. The girls picked their favorite costumes as well… Princess Jasmine and Snow White. We worked together and made scones, tea sandwiches, ants on a log and more! I found decaf raspberry tea so we could be extra fancy. I found a tablecloth at the Dollar Tree and flowers at Aldi. I tried to make it extra girly and cute. The girls and I had a blast and ate way too many scones!

The second year, I dressed as a corgi. The girls opted for super hero outfits. It was fun enjoying a spot of tea and a scone with Wonder Woman and Spider Girl. Because the girls were older, they really put together most of the menu. We love cooking and baking together and making pink lemonade and peanut butter and honey sandwiches was a blast. Of coarse, we cut the crusts off.

This year, I haven’t quite figured out what I want to do. I know sticking with the tea party theme is tradition.  However, I’m thinking more the attire…? Should we opt for pajamas? I was thinking of making this Galentine’s Day like a fun slumber party with popcorn. movies and jammies. We could have a tea party but, I think it would be fun to have a pillow fight, make a fort and make cookies!

As you can probably see- I love making memories with my nanny kids. It’s something I cherish and I hope they do as well. Friendships are important. I want to teach the girls that your sister is your best friend for life. Celebrate the ones you love including family and friends. It doesn’t need to be anything expensive or elaborate. Kids want your time. Make a special day for them once in a while. Galentine’s Day is a silly excuse for a party with my friends.

Galentine’s Day is a simple way to show you care. It doesn’t matter if you celebrate February 15 or October 7… Make sure you let your friends know how much they mean to you by simply spending time with one another.
