We are happy to announce that Pittsburgh Moms Blog has partnered with Sydney Paige backpacks in order to benefit Pittsburgh Public Schools.

Here’s how it works: if you purchase a backpack (or more) for someone on your holiday shopping list, a matching bag filled with school supplies will be donated to a child in need through Pittsburgh Public Schools.*

This is Sydney Paige’s Buy One, Give One philosophy. For each bag purchased, one is donated. We ask supporters to purchase bags directly on www.sydneypaigeinc.com. You will see Pittsburgh Public Schools in the drop-down menu once you select a backpack for purchase. Remember to use the code #PghMomsGiveBack in the Coupon code before checking out to receive 10% off your entire purchase.

If you don’t have someone on your shopping list that could use one of these backpacks, but still want to get involved in the giving, there is a ‘donate only’ option as well. That donated backpack will be filled with school supplies and donated directly to Pittsburgh Public Schools.

Sydney Paige has bags for toddlers to adults, so there is a great variety and sizes to meet various needs on your holiday list. Be sure to check out their cute bags, which can be personalized, and in many ways, in our humble opinion, resemble the styles of high-end retailers like Pottery Barn Kids.

If your kids are anything like mine, we need new backpacks every couple of months because the seams bust and they get filthy. I’m getting my kids the Young Explorer style for elementary kids for Santa presents. Because I know how beat up these bags get going to school every day, I understand how sad it would be if a family didn’t have the money to buy even one at the beginning of the school year, let alone constantly replace them. The founder of Sydney Paige explained to me that many children that she’s seen take their books to school in a black plastic garbage bag.

This is a great charity that not only provides a sturdy, yet stylish, bag, but it is filled with items that we typically take for granted, but don’t always exist in every home. You know those school supply lists that we complain about buying in August (I did it too and now feel terribly guilty). For many families, those supplies are a luxury that they can’t afford. Many kids don’t even have pencils and crayons necessary not only to do school work, but for any art project at home.

Here’s a list of what gets donated for each bag purchased. For example, for grades K through 2:

  • Sydney Paige Valencia Backpack (11″ x 16″ x 6″)
  • 12″ Rulerbackpack-high-school
  • 1-Subject Notebook
  • #2 Pencils (12pk)
  • Colored Pencils (12pk)
  • Washable Fine Tip Markers
  • Crayons (24cnt)
  • Watercolor Set
  • Pencil Case (plastic box)
  • Pencil Sharpener
  • 2 Glue Sticks
  • Large Eraser
  • Scissors, 5″ Blunt Tip
  • 2-Pocket Folder (durable poly)

It has been a pleasure working with Sydney Paige, who’s passionate about providing quality products to children in need. The ‘mantra’ for Sydney Paige is “Giving Back Together” because “alone, I can only do so much, but by partnering with others giving back to their communities, the opportunities are endless.”

*Please note that purchased backpacks do not come filled with school supplies, only the donated ones are.
