National Library Week :: Our Favorite Libraries

Libraries are clearly one of our contributors’ favorite places in Pittsburgh, and the Carnegie Libraries are, in my opinion some of the best around. In honor of National Library Week, we want to share some of our favorite libraries in the 412. Here is a list of some of our favorite libraries throughout Allegheny County and surrounding areas.

Favorite Libraries for Kids

Shaler Library– This library is a Designated Family Place Library which means they embrace that learning begins at birth and enriches the community when families come together for literacy. They also have a HUGE list of classes and events for all ages. Thanks Patricia for the library suggestion!

Northern Tier Library– I wish I lived near this library! Their list of children’s activities looks like so much fun for little ones. Right now they have a Drop In Craft Class, Baby Playtime, Pine cone Bird Feeder crafts, Toddler Story time, and Improv for Kids. Thanks Anny for the library love!

Northland Public Library– This library has a guinea pig mascot named Charlotte Fezziwig, how cute is that?!? She has a favorite book and even her own Facebook page. They also have a Playful Parenting Room where children and caregivers can play, read, and socialize. Their website is really wonderful and shares so many events and resources for parents. Thanks Karen for the suggestion!

Millvale Community Library– This is another library that has some fun activities for our littlest library patrons. Small Fry Fridays is a fun story time, craft, and snack for little ones. Right now they also have a design a bookmark contest to celebrate Millvale’s 150th anniversary. All the bookmarks will be displayed in the library, what a neat way for each child to feel special! Thanks Megan for the library suggestion!

Sewickley Library– This is my favorite library near me. The baby story time is so much fun, they have silly songs, puppets, a bubble machine, and board books for the babies to play with. Their children’s DVD selection is huge and my toddler loves picking a new DVD out to borrow for the week.

Scottdale Public Library– Even though this one is not in Pittsburgh, it is close by and one of our contributors favorite hometown libraries. They have a new kids room and even a kids book club. Thanks Julia for sharing!

Be sure to check out your local libraries website and Facebook pages, there are so many events that are free that you and your family can take advantage of. We recently did a Toddler Parachute Play at the Sewickley Library, a drop in craft program at the Moon Township Library, and toddler story time at the Aliquippa Library. All of these events were free and fun for my little ones.

Even if you do not want to commit to an event, just drop into your local library and check out the books, toys, and other things they have to offer. Some days it is the perfect quick outing to have a change of venue and play with toys and read books that are not ours. We love our local libraries!
