2019 BLOOM Event: A Celebration of Motherhood

We couldn’t be happier to announce that Bloom: A Celebration of Motherhood is returning for the 3rd consecutive year in Pittsburgh! This mom-centered event will feature businesses, speakers, massages and food that all aim to make moms’ lives easier and better. This mama event will be a fun afternoon out to spend with your sisters, moms, and friends simply focusing on YOU, because you, dear mama, deserve it!

Since this event is all about YOU, please take the time to yourself and leave kiddos at home (all except for those sweet little nurslings – but please plan to carry or wear that tiny one as there won’t be much room for strollers).

Katie Stern

The Little Fox – Toby’s Foundation

Educating on SIDS and Safe Sleep Practices

Katie Stern is the co-founder, along with her husband Dan, of The Little Fox – Toby’s Foundation. The Stern’s family was forever changed when their second son, Toby, went down for an afternoon nap on August 24, 2016, and never woke up. Toby died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Walking through grief, Katie and Dan, created The Little Fox – Toby’s Foundation to educate others on SIDS and advocate for Safe Sleep Practices for every infant.

The Little Fox is a partner with Owlet Baby Monitors and raises money to purchase Smart Socks that are in turn donated to families. The Smart Sock is a device used to monitor an infant’s oxygen level and heart rate while they are asleep. To date, Toby’s Foundation has donated over 100 monitors to families across the country. It is their hope that through the efforts of The Little Fox – Toby’s Foundation, and other Foundations across the United States like theirs, that each family bringing home a new baby will have a Smart Sock device, providing peace of mind.

In addition, The Little Fox is dedicated to partnering with local Pittsburgh organizations to spread joy to families and children the way Toby brought joy to his family for the 12 weeks that he was here on Earth.

In November 2018, the Stern’s welcomed their third son, Ezekiel (Zeke), who joins big brother, Lucas at home.

“Toby’s impact on this earth far exceeded the 12 weeks and 5 days he spent in our arms. We will never know “why” but we know God is using Toby for bigger things than we could have ever imagined, as his parents. For now, it is our duty to carry on his legacy, to tell Toby’s story, and to educate others about SIDS,” Katie says.

For more information on the mission and outreach of The Little Fox – Toby’s Foundation, or to apply to receive an Owlet Smart Sock, visit www.thelittlefoxfoundation.org.

Yoga Class for Pre-Natal, Natal and Post Natal Guests

Kimberly Manns, Instructor

Kim started practicing yoga at the urging of her medical professionals when she was pregnant with her first child. She found it immensely helpful and kept with the practice through her second pregnancy and after!. In 2000, she earned her first 500 hour teaching certification and has continued her studies every year with some of the nation’s best. Kim muses that she has spent over 38k on her yoga teaching education…more than her Master’s Degree in Human Resource Development.. She has taught classes at The Rivers Club, Carnegie Mellon University, The Himalayan Institute and joined our teaching staff at the Spencer YMCA summer 2017.

Recent Referral from existing Spencer Member:

I had a private prenatal yoga lesson with Kim. She is knowledgable and passionate about yoga, and had a trained eye to make adjustments to my poses that make a big difference which muscles I am using- but like a true teacher she wouldn’t just tell me how to do something, she would make sure I knew why. Highly recommend!

Cloth Diaper Demo

Judy McAuley, Owner

Judy McAuley and her husband Brandon started Green Cheeks cloth diaper service in 2010 after their oldest child was born. They saw a need in their local community, and as their business grew, they decided to take over the local cloth diaper store, Happy Baby Company, in 2013. Judy soon expanded the business to serve families’ holistic needs. HBC still carries the region’s largest selection of cloth diapers and baby carriers, but also stocks everything from eco-friendly toys and CBD oil to menstrual hygiene products and reusable straws. Judy became a certified babywearing educator in 2014 and is a huge (un-certified) car seat safety nerd, proud to carry Clek car seats, RideSafer Vests and more. In the past decade, Judy has helped keep 2 million diapers out of the landfill while teaching families how to safely transport their children, care for their bodies, and enrich their minds.

Intrigued by cloth diapering, but a little overwhelmed at all of the options? Maybe just a little scared of how to deal with the poop? Judy McAuley from Happy Baby Company and Green Cheeks Diaper Service will cover the basics in a short session, and will have some actual cloth diapers on hand for you to see and touch, too.   Cloth diapering is easy, and healthier for your baby and the planet! You can keep approximately two tons of diapers out of the landfill by choosing cloth diapers for your baby.
