Family-Owned Pittsburgh Catering Business Open For Events, Parties, and Pizza

Are you still making all the food for your family reunion, graduation party, or cookout? If you imagine a party where you actually get to enjoy yourself, you’ll want to check out Black Market Catering. Black Market is a local made-to-order catering and specialty meats company owned by two people who really “get” food. Owners Domenic and Tina Betters think that creative, healthy and delicious food shouldn’t be hard to find.

Dom and Tina founded Black Market in late 2017 following careers in food service and butchery. For years, Black Market was a side gig and a chance for Dom to experiment with his family’s homemade jerky recipe. Their adventure really started in 2018 with a shared storefront in Pittsburgh’s Allentown neighborhood. The physical location featured a deli and regular homemade dinner specials, something the Hilltop community lacked. They always did catering, and when the opportunity arose to expand the catering business, they shifted their focus to it almost entirely (we say almost, because the homemade jerky remains a staple product!).

Black Market Catering is equal parts specialty caterer and comfort food. Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options are somewhat of a staple, existing alongside traditional entrees you’d expect to see at Grandma’s Sunday dinner – or your favorite four-star restaurant. You could have coconut and lime curry tofu and quinoa stuffed bell peppers alongside Asian marinated flank steak and a clam boil in the same menu if you wanted. You know there will be something for everyone from a caterer knowledgeable about different food sensitivities.

Dom’s career as a trained butcher also means that Black Market has a true appreciation for meats. They take great care to craft menu selections where the meat can really shine alongside unique flavors like spicy avocado burgers, buffalo chicken scrambles, and hot Italian sausage kabobs. They specialize in elevating and transforming familiar foods, like red & green vegetarian lasagna and homemade kielbasa. Black Market Jerky, made in-house in small batches, comes in 15 different flavors and is sold al a carte.

Their catering menu includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner options plus appetizers, sandwiches, soups, desserts, and side dishes. Everything can be customized. Since Black Market sources their food products from local farms like Clarion River Organics, their menu changes seasonally. They can provide drop-off catering for self-serve events or they can cook and serve on-site, depending on what you’re looking for. They’ve done catering for corporate events, weddings, birthday parties, and other gatherings throughout the Pittsburgh area.

Black Market Catering was at Bloom on May 11th, showcasing a sample of their ever-changing menu. Guests enjoyed spinach and feta dip, Granny Smith apple salad, smoked chicken sandwiches, and Italian sandwiches. You can also find them at various pop-up events throughout the Pittsburgh region. They help support other local businesses like Black Forge Coffee House with their Weekend Brunches. Not close to you? Check them out at Hitchhiker Brewing for BBQ food throughout the summer. When their schedule allows, they like to vend at festivals and farmer’s markets such as Deutschtown Music Festival, Pittsburgh Taco Festival, and Squirrel Hill Night Markets.

As their business has continued to evolve, they have purchased a pizza shop in Brookline. A neighborhood favorite, Antonio’s Pizzeria is now owned by Dom and Tina, and they have begun adding Black Market favorites to the pizza shop menu. You can get a pizza topped with that delicious homemade Italian Sausage, and soon they’ll be using Dom’s homemade meatballs on the meatball hoagies & hot Italian sausage on the sausage hoagies. They also plan to add a larger variety of homemade pasta sauces, soups (when the weather cools down), and more options for folks who are looking for healthier options or who have dietary restrictions.
